About Sumter, SC
Sumter, SC sits in the Sandhills region of central South Carolina, roughly 45 miles east of Columbia and well within the broader Midlands footprint that extends from Lake Murray through Sumter County. The city covers approximately 33 square miles, of which about 32.9 square miles is land, and serves as the seat of Sumter County. As of the 2020 census, Sumter recorded 43,463 residents, making it the ninth-largest city in South Carolina and one of the most populous communities outside the immediate Columbia metro.

Sumter’s economy is driven heavily by Shaw Air Force Base, home to the 20th Fighter Wing, the headquarters of Fifteenth Air Force, and U.S. Army Central. The base has been a major source of federal and civilian employment since World War II and shapes much of the local housing demand. Beyond Shaw, the city hosts manufacturers including the Swiss-based EMS-Chemie, along with textile, biotech, and logistics employers. Public education is operated by Sumter School District, which runs Sumter High School, Lakewood High School, and Crestwood High School, among others. Higher education is represented by Morris College, Central Carolina Technical College, and the University of South Carolina Sumter.
Local landmarks include Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the only public park in the United States that hosts all eight known species of swan, as well as Memorial Park downtown.
