About Prosperity, SC
Prosperity, SC is a historic incorporated town in southern Newberry County, located approximately 35 miles northwest of Columbia and 12 miles southeast of the city of Newberry. The town sits along U.S. Highway 76 and is bounded to the south by the northern reaches of Lake Murray, placing it within easy reach of the lake’s western shoreline and recreational access points. Interstate 26 passes just north of the town, with the Prosperity exit (Exit 82) providing direct access to the Midlands and Upstate.
According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Prosperity has a population of approximately 1,200 residents. The town was originally chartered as Frog Level in the early 1800s and renamed Prosperity in 1873 to reflect the optimism of the post-Reconstruction railroad era. The arrival of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad cemented the town’s role as a regional commercial hub, and many of the late-19th and early-20th-century commercial and residential structures along Main Street and Wheeler Avenue remain remarkably well preserved today.
Prosperity’s historic downtown is one of the most architecturally intact small-town commercial districts in the Midlands, with brick storefronts, decorative cornices, and original storefront windows lining the main blocks. The Prosperity Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town operates with a mayor and town council and provides its own water, sewer, and police services. Named neighborhoods and areas in and around Prosperity, SC include the historic downtown core, the Pomaria Road residential corridor, the Hope Station community to the south, the Wheeler Hill area, and the rural communities of Macedonia and Zion to the north.
Most working residents commute to employment in Newberry, Chapin, Columbia, or the Lake Murray dam area. Major regional employers include Newberry County Memorial Hospital, Newberry College, Komatsu, Samsung’s Newberry distribution operations, and various Midlands employers reachable via I-26.
