Irmo, SC is a town that straddles Lexington and Richland counties, situated approximately 12 miles northwest of downtown Columbia along the Interstate 26 corridor. The town covers about 6.86 square miles, with an additional surrounding area, including the Dutch Fork community and parts of Ballentine, often considered “Greater Irmo.” Irmo sits just east of Lake Murray and serves as one of the primary commuter and shopping hubs for residents living along the lake’s eastern shoreline. Newer developments continue to expand along Lake Murray Boulevard, Broad River Road, and St. Andrews Road. Many subdivisions feature half-acre lots, brick-and-vinyl homes from the late 1970s onward, and amenities such as community pools, tennis courts, and lake access.
The local economy is driven by retail and service businesses along the St. Andrews Road, Harbison Boulevard, and Lake Murray Boulevard corridors, with the Harbison shopping district just east of Irmo serving as a major regional retail hub. Most working residents commute into Columbia for jobs in state government, healthcare with Prisma Health and Lexington Medical Center, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, and education. Public schools are served by Lexington-Richland School District 5, which includes Irmo Elementary, Irmo Middle School, and Irmo High School, along with Dutch Fork Elementary, Middle, and High schools serving the western portion of the community.
